Puppies are cute, and they are a favorite choice when a family is looking to get a new pet. Dogs can quickly become a part of the family, but are not quite as able to care for themselves as other types of pets. Cat use a litter box, and easily learn this in most cases. Sometimes, house training a puppy can be a long process with a lot of little messes to clean up before the puppy learns when and where to go to the bathroom. Make sure you make time for proper dog training so that you do not spend time cleaning up messes for a very long time.
House training a puppy may not be that hard if you have gotten an older puppy. You may find that they are already trained, or they are almost there. It depends on where you get your new dog. Most that come from a shelter are at least partially trained, but that is not always the case. If you have gotten that dog as soon as they are old enough to leave the company of their mother, you may have to do all of the house training on your own. Be sure to ask if they do not let you know where your new pet stands in this area. Be prepared to do it on your own.
The first step in house training a puppy is to get comfortable with your dog. You will want to be ready to handle what comes out of his or her bottom. You should invest in some gloves if you feel that you are really squeamish in this area. It is possible to clean up mistakes without gloves, but if you worry a lot, gloves can help give you a bit of reassurance that you are not getting waste on your hands. You will also want to have what are called puppy pads, or a good supply of newspaper. The pads are better, but newspaper will work.
You can expect quite a few accidents when you first start house training a puppy. They have no idea what is expected of them right away, so they do not know that they are doing something wrong. Do not use something to hit them when they have gone in the wrong place. This teaches them to fear you, not respect you, and that is not something you want. Find tips for gently reminding them of where they are supposed to go. If you have the time, the best way to do this is to watch them for when they start to go, and then to move them directly to the right area. They learn quickly this way.

As with anything, there are pros and cons with both of these methods. A trainer can become quite expensive, and you also have to transport your dog to and from the trainer’s location; however, the trainer is experienced in this type of work. On the other hand, if you train your dog yourself, you have the ability to do it virtually expense free, and you can also do it from the comfort and convenience of your own home; however, you need to acquire a bit of knowledge on proper dog training before you can begin.
The three basics of dog training are quite simple. They include the commands sit, stay, and come. A helpful tool for teaching these basics is some sort of small dog treat, such as a dog biscuit. The first, and easiest of the three of these commands, is teaching your dog to sit. The best way to begin is to first choose a place that has little or no distraction for your dog, such as your living room when no one else is around but you and the dog, and the television or radio is not blaring. Then, you should simply show the dog the treat in your hand, and then hold it high above the dog’s head while repeating the command, “sit,” over and over again. Holding it high will force your dog to sit and look up in order to see the treat. If this does not work to make your dog sit, just gently push his bottom down until he is in a sitting position, and once he is, simply give him his treat, some head patting, and some praise. This will eventually reinforce the idea that the command “sit” is associated with a treat and praise.
The second command is “stay.” This command must only be taught once your dog has mastered the sitting command. This is a bit more difficult than “sit” because your dog’s natural instinct is to follow you around. Make your dog sit in once place as you gradually begin to walk away. As you walk away, repeat the word “stay” over and over again. You also must maintain eye contact with your dog, and if he tries to get up and walk over to you, simply and firmly say “no” and start the procedure over. As this is a more difficult command, it takes much more patience and time, and it may actually be helpful if you can have someone else helping you who can hold your dog as you walk away. Once your dog has learned the “stay” command while maintaining eye contact with you, the next step is to walk away without looking at your dog. The same process applies. When your dog rises to follow, simply say “no” and repeat the process. As with the sitting process, do not forget the rewards and praise.
The final, and somewhat easier command, is to “come.” Once your dog has mastered the stay command while you walk away, you can teach him this final command. After walking away for a bit of a distance, simply turn to your dog, pat your legs, and very cheerfully say, “come.” Your dog will almost surely follow this prompt, and when he does, give him plenty of praise and also his tasty treat. Don’t forget that praise and reward are much better for you and your dog, as dogs respond much better to positive rather than to negative reinforcement. Following these dog training basics will surely leave you with an obedient and happy dog, and it will make you proud to know that you are the one who made him this way.

This week’s training tip has to do with matching your training methods and approach with your dog’s temperament and disposition. Unfortunately, this is something that is often overlooked by some dog trainers.
If done correctly, behavioral dog training should also help to shape and improve your dog’s character. Self esteem, confidence and a sense of belonging – of loving and being loved should be the natural result of behavioral training as well as a well behaved dog.
In order to accomplish all of this it is vital that the methods used and your approach match your dog’s personality. Although this sounds like common sense it can be a little trickier than it sounds. Here’s what I mean.
It’s pretty obvious that when dealing with a shy dog or sensitive dog you should lighten the methods of restriction and REALLY emphasize positive action and behaviors, acknowledging with exaggerated rewards. It also makes sense that when dealing with a excessively boisterous or even a dominant dog you need to handle things more firmly.
But what do you do when faced with some of the following scenarios…
* A dog who is very outgoing but is sensitive to any correction or Disapproval.
* A mischievous dog or trouble maker who has separation anxiety – can’t stand to be apart from their owner.
* A timid dog who turns aggressive when you try to correct them or tell them “No!”. (behaviors like ‘fear biting’)
* Or the usually well behaved ‘happy’ dog who is completely emotionally crushed by any disapproval shown by the owner.
These are just a few examples of dog-personalities I’ve worked with. As a general rule it’s best to use neutral body language and expression when having to say “No!” to your dog. Also methods like the four Compassionate Control Actions that I teach do a lot of the communicating for you.
The only time I purposely express emotions when doing behavioral dog training is when I’m working with a dominant, stubborn confrontative dog (like my Indigo) who’ll actually argue and grumble when they get into trouble. For this type of dog I like to express “profound disappointment” to help get through to them and to be taken seriously.
As an aside, anger is one of the least effective emotions to express when dog training. It tends to either trigger an undesirable response or scare the dog. Either response is not what you’re aiming for and certainly doesn’t help to build good character.
But no matter what you do, be sensitive and aware of your dog’s emotional experience. If anything err on the side of caution at first. If, for example, you give your dog a “Time Out” for the first time keep it really short (1-2 minutes). When done this way the worst that can happen is your dog might not take you seriously the first time and you have to repeat it for a longer time.
If on the other hand you gave your dog a long “Time Out”, say 15 minutes and they came out of there terrified and in shock, you may have caused emotional trauma that could take months to turn around.
So in the beginning take it easy, take it slow and carefully observe your dog’s reaction. You can always up it a notch later on.

One thing that training puppies and raising kids have in common is that if you have their full attention, they will learn the lesson faster and better. Puppies make it easy on you because there is nothing they want more than your happy face pointed in their direction. Here are 5 ways to accomplish this, therefore learning the lesson in half the time:
1.) Use potty time. Puppies love to go outside. Since you are already rewarding him for fast response outside, with loving praise and a happy face, use the excitement to work on another lesson at the same time. For example, work on his leash breaking. Some of the time spent while you are house breaking your puppy should be time spent ON lead, even if you have a fenced yard. A dog who is always loose in his yard when he goes will not go on-lead in a strange place. He will hold it so long you think he surely will burst. Of course this is not healthy for him, and you never know when you will need to take him out on lead. As soon as he is finished his potty and received his happy praise, say, “Wanna work?” in such a happy excited voice that he will share your eagerness by his very nature. Spend a few minutes with his heeling and sitting work, depending on where you are in his lessons, and give high praise. It does not have to be a full session, just an added minute or two to reinforce the lessons he is currently working on.
2.) Use meal times. At no point in the day do you have your dog’s attention stronger than when he is hungry. Do not tease him with his food, ever, or take toooo long to give him his meal, but you can make a fun game out of a few little lessons before he receives his plate. For example, since he should already be learning to sit calmly off to the side as his food is being prepared, (also when you are fixing your own), work on a short version that will encourage success. Rather than asking him to sit/stay for the whole long time, reward him with little bites as you go. If he sits for 30 seconds, give him a bite with high praise, release him for a moment, and place him again with a fresh command, only repeating the command when the first one ended in success. Never repeat a command if he fails to obey. If he does this, make a stern face and quietly place his body in the same spot you started with with a firm nudge as if to say, “HERE is where you were told to be.”
3.) Use the happy time when you let him out of his crate. You do not want to make too large a fuss when releasing him, just open the door and let him out, but of course it makes him happy and focussed on you anyway. When he is out of his crate and you are giving him love, say, “Wanna work?” and do a little 2 minute lesson, like sit, or down. Since he is excited only ask for 5 or 10 seconds at most, then praise praise praise! You must train when it is difficult for the dog to do it or he will only behave when he wants to behave, not when he NEEDS to.
4.) Use a new toy. Just like with his food and treats, do not withhold a new toy for longer than 2 minutes or so. Get his attention with it by letting him smell and taste it a little, without releasing it to him. Once your puppy has a toy or chewie actually in his possession it is a huge reward for him, so make sure he deserves it from something he has done well. Do a few lessons, like a 1 minute down/stay or any other command that you are already working on. Do not introduce new lessons when the puppy is already excited. Use calm time for that.
5.) Use his regular session time. He loves his on-lead work time with you already, so before and after each work session, work on things that arent actually session work but, say, good doggy manners or just understanding English. For example get his ball and teach him your call words, like “Fetch” or “Get it!”, whatever you choose, make sure you keep using the same words over and over so he will learn them quickly.
Follow these tips in a consistent loving way and your puppy will learn faster than you ever thought possible, and become the best companion he can ever be.

Dog obedience training is not about being mean or hurting the animal. It is about making sure that he or she knows the rules of behavior and what the consequences of those rules are.
